Woodward Dream Cruise 2006: Wagoner shows off the Camaro
As the annual Woodward event becomes ever more commercial, on Friday this year's General Motors promotion featured CEO Rick Wagoner starring in a Chevrolet cavalcade of Camaros, leading the way with the new Camaro concept. The Chevy parade wound up at the Athens Coney Island diner, for a final retro touch to the event.
With the new Camaro scheduled for a 2009 launch, expect the GM brass to put a lot of miles on the concept car in the next two years.
Looks like ex-basketball star Wagoner finds the chop-top profile of the concept car a bit cramped...

Launch in 2009?
By that time, people will be sick of looking at this thing.
It's all hype and will be a let-down when it's finally offered for sale.
GM's Saturn Aura and other high volume cars will save this company, not a cramped, sporty car that's nothing more than a tease for almost 3 years.

With a 2009 launch, that would be plenty of time between now and then for the beancounters at GM to decontent and penny pinch such that the actual production model will be almost guaranteed to fall short of expectations.

Sorry, but I speak for myself and the vast legions of people who, in truth, don't have the slightest idea what will excite them as far off as 2009.
There's too much hype about the Camaro now and when it finally hits the street, it's as likely to disappoint as it is to thrill.
If you really are a "General Motors Man 4 Life" you don't have a clue about what you're missing.

Boy does that car look comfortable to drive! I mean all that headroom is just outrageous. Surely the production model will eliminate the unnecessarily tall roofline.

Yeah, Toyota makes the meanest cars around. The Corolla XRS and the Scion tC are hella cool. I'll take those any day over the Camaro or the Corvette. I just love that lawnmower buzz coming out of the coffee-can exhaust. If I can save up enough money, maybe I'll buy some TRD stickers. The car will be even meaner, no doubt. Perfect for taking on the BMW and Porsches. Wheeee....

I hope this car doesn't come out like the Mustang. It was a wet dream through the concept phase. Upon release, it was a giant disapointment. I just drove an 07 'Stang last week, and while I want a RWD sport coupe, I'm not getting out of my truck for that thing. I'm doing my best not to get my hopes up for the Camaro.

Well like most camaro fans I hope it will be a great success. But judging from the last few "comebacks" (the "yes I have a great engine, but I look like crap" GTO and the "I was so cool untill I hit the production phase" Mustang)I have a feeling that we will once again all be dissapointed. I mean everytime I see the concept I think "WoW ! It's awesome" and then my next though is : "I wonder how they'll screw it up this time.." Just thinking about the fact that this needs to be little brother to the Vette has me worried; what will production Hp be ? 300? 350 ? less ? I sincerely hope GM isnt going to take 3 years to screw up a great idea and a true american legend...

If Chevrolet waits until 2009 to release the new Camaro they will so far behind in the New Muscle cars game like the Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger the interested cold be over. It is cool now but are Chevrolet customer willing to wait? Good Luck Chevrolet. Maybe this will give Chevrolet time to design and build a real protype Corvette and make a real statement. What do you thing about that Chevrolet?

One word in response to Camaro.....CHALLENGER.Its coming out before Camaro,its got a Hemi and probably a manual transmission too.It looks a heck of a lot like the legendary 1970 model,and no movie was ever based around a Camaro (Vanishing Point,for the Challenger),although they did crash a 67 Camaro at the end.....

I agree... the Challenger is going to satiate any desires for this style of car long before GM even gets the first Camaro off the line. The only folks that will buy his are the die had GM fans and the nostalgic owners of Camaros-past.
It would be nice to see GM start making cars that don't take 3-4 years from concept to the showroom. Unfortunately, the Camaro will no longer be eye candy by its debut date, and will probably be tired to all but it's most loyal fans. There are a lot of people that can't see the differences between the 70s Challengers and Camaros, and I don't think many people will take the time to distinguish between the new models that are coming out.
I think both are nice mean looking beasts and glad to see their names back in the market, I just don't think they will be as impressive as the hype wants them to be.
