Enter the rumormill: 500HP Infiniti G37 twin-turbo on tap for 2010
May we first present to you a grain of salt, which you should take with what we're about to say. A comment left on an earlier post today confirming the G37 Coupe's new name led us to the Freshalloy forums where a member had recently posted some tantalizing information. The Freshalloy forum member relays information he obtained from the owner of his local Nissan/Infiniti dealership that includes not only confirmation of the new G37 name four days before today's official announcement, but also speculation that the larger engine will produce 325 horsepower "out of the box". On a follow up visit, the forum member learned that a possible 330-hp variant of the G37 is also currently being tested at sea level. Finally, the owner said that the new G37 will be in dealerships this summer around July or August.
The real nugget of speculation that interests us, however, is the possibility that Infiniti will produce an all-wheel drive, twin-turbocharged version of the G37 in 2010 that will produce 500 horsepower. Such a car sounds a lot like the Nissan GT-R, the first production Skyline ever to be sold in the U.S. Even though this news come from a forum post written by a guy who talked to some dealer, and its validity can in no way be confirmed at this time, we have to admit that it makes sense to us.
We're well aware that Infiniti dealers were not happy when one Carlos Ghosn announced the GT-R would be badged a Nissan, so an ultra high-performance version of the G37 is one relatively easy way to appease those dealers. We also presume that the G37 Coupe and GT-R will share a good deal of hardware, which makes us wonder if the GT-R's powerplant will turn out to be a twin-turbo version of the G37's 3.7L VQ V6, rather than the 3.5L version. That would certainly explain the blistering lap times a prototype was turning at Laguna Seca last month.
Oh yeah, the dealer is expecting a G37 convertible in 2009. You may now exit the rumormill.

Viva la RWD Coupe! if it looks good, and goes well, it could be a really good thing.
It will probably look much better than the GTR concept.
I'd almost prefer a performance variant with a 4.5-50 liter DOHC V8, with or without turbos, as opposed to a stick. There is just something romantic about 8 cylinders.
Good Luck Infiniti. Sport Coupe enthusiasts will be watching.

mental misfire:
A DOHC V8 as opposed to a V6. I would certainly want it offered with a stick shift option.

Great idea to offer a 500HP car so morons can take greater risks on crowded roads than they do now.
These cars are fine technology wasted on posers with more money than brains.
Save this crap for the race tracks.

Last I checked, the Fit and Yaris were available with a nice, safe 100-some horsepower.
Wait for the Smart to come to the US...
But honestly, the pessimism gets you nowhere. So you don't like it. Fine. there is plenty of slow boring cars out there for you.
Not all people who drive performance cars are irresponsible, and with the money that these sort of cars cost, even fewer people are careless.

Then why do we keep seeing an Enzo wrapped around a tree every other week?

I thought it was a given that the GT-R would have more displacement than 3.5L. There was that wrecked Altima that the junk yard had in CA from the testing that was bored out. This was months ago.

Re: the convertible... I know for a fact that it is on the drawing board. I went down to Nissan a year or so ago and spent the day going over my preferences of interior seating positions for a convertible version of the new G. It pays to own a competitor.

How many times can Autoblog recycle the same image in one day?

#3 has a good point. But if you think about it, G35's are not cheap. And rumor has it, their raising the price by about a few hundred dollars. The 500hp G37 coupe will probably be too expensive for the majority of the teenage tuner crowd. Also, it will probably be very limited production, so we'll all be safe on the roads.
We are in another modern day horsepower war between all of the manufactures. Someday, a 400HP Camry LE will be offered as the basemodel.

... at some point more hp doesn't make sense (ducks)... however 400 bhp and 40 mpg is an interesting idea for increased engine efficiency.

Yeah, because that .2L displacement difference makes HUGE impact on final output and overall speed.

I've always thought the G35 is the best car in its segment (price range). I'm lookin forward to the 37!

For every Enzo wrapped around a tree, there are 100,000 SUVs rolled over or in an accident because people think they can drive them like cars.

Please give the G37 convertible a power retractable hardtop at least as an option.

After buying a new G35S 6MT sedan, I ran into the salesperson that sold it to me and got a chance to talk to him on a personal level (he's a great guy and was more than helpful with the purchase). He told me the car he's waiting to buy for himself is the convertible coupe. So apparently this rumor isn't coming from just one dealer. It would seem that at least a few if not all dealers have the same info. He also said the displacement is being bumped up to 3.7 liters but he didn't mention anything about the turbo version. My car is on a 3 year lease so I'd love to see myself in a turbo coupe convertible next.

If you look at cars in that price segment(assuming about 70-80k price range), you will find that most sporty cars in that segment already have 400-500 hp. Many of them also handle nearly as well as race cars. The idea is not new and doesn't provide a new outlet for people to be morons. It simply provides another means for the morons to live up to their lack of common sense. You can't shield the world from morons and you would certainly be taking away the rest of our enjoyment if you prevented fun sporty cars from being sold just in case someone actually wants to drive them beyond reason.

I heard the same info about the August debut of the G37 and that a convertible (folding hardtop) is coming at an AZ Infinit dealer.
I'm going to have a hard time deciding between a G37 or GT-R, especially if the G37 gets the same drivetrain.

Here's where Bryan usually piles on with some mindless character assasination of Ghosn or callng Nissan's and Infiniti POS's. He must be sleeping now - or else Toyota had a staff meeting for its janitorial staff. LOL
